Waterproofing

Waterproofing for Showers and Wet Areas in Adelaide

We do our own waterproofing and we don't subcontract it. We waterproof showers, bathrooms and other wet areas before they're tiled.

Waterproofing

What waterproofing does

Tiles are what you see. Waterproofing is the layer behind them that protects walls and floors from water damage. It goes on before the tiling, so nobody sees it once the job is finished. That's why it has to be done properly the first time.

Where we waterproof

Showers, bathrooms and other wet areas.

A shower works hardest, with water running down the walls and across the floor every day. Bathroom and ensuite floors, laundries and other rooms where water is regularly present are wet areas too. Not sure if an area needs waterproofing? Ask us when you enquire.

One business

Done by us, not subcontracted

We do both the waterproofing and the tiling. The waterproofing isn't handed to another business.

So one business looks after the surface, the waterproofing and the tiling. We plan the order of work together, and there's no hand-over between trades in the middle of a wet area.

Preparing the surface

Waterproofing can only be as good as the surface it goes on. The surface needs to be clean, sound and shaped so water runs to the waste. If a floor is uneven or needs falls, we screed it first (see screeding).

Corners, wall-to-floor joins, the area around the drain and any pipes or fixings through the wall are where water gets in first. They get the most attention. We'd rather spend the time here than open up a finished bathroom later.

A new screed needs time to set and dry before we waterproof, so we plan the timing around that.

Order of work

Where waterproofing sits in the job

  1. We prepare the surface.

We level it and give it the right falls where needed.

  2. We waterproof the wet area.

    Before any tile is laid.

  3. Then we tile it.

We grout it and finish with silicone.

The order

Why the order matters

That's the order that lets a waterproofed shower be tiled. For the tiling side, see bathroom tiling and wall and floor tiling.

If you tile over a surface that hasn't been waterproofed, the walls and floor depend on grout and silicone alone, and neither is waterproof. The waterproofing protects the structure. The tiles and grout are just what you see.
